Rain alert for East Coast
Moderate and occasionally heavy rain occurring in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor is expected to persist until Thursday.
According to a statement from the Malaysian Meteorological Department Wednesday, the areas involved were Jeli, Machang, Pasir Mas and Tanah Merah in Kelantan, while in Terengganu, the areas affected were in the Besut, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu and Kuala Terengganu districts, and in Pahang, the affected areas were Bentong, Jerantut, Kuantan, Lipis, Maran and Raub, and in Johor the affected area was Mersing.
It could cause flood in low-lying areas and those along river banks, the statement said.
Meanwhile, strong north-easterly winds with a speed of 60 km per hour and waves of up to 5.5 metres were expected to continue in the waters off Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, East Johor, South Samui, Tioman, Bunguran, Condore, Reef North and Layang-layang until Monday.
According to the statement, the strong wind condition and choppy sea would be dangerous to all beach activities including workers on the oil platforms.

Mersing tragedy: Survivor's account
As efforts were intensified on Monday to find the sole Singaporean still missing after the Boxing Day tragedy in Malaysia, the first accounts have emerged from survivors of the boat mishap that has now claimed the lives of four Singaporeans.
Choppy waters, a violent shaking of the boat and then the struggle in the water - for some, even a struggle to escape the boat cabin. The story was told while more than 130 personnel from various agencies in Mersing were out at sea to search for 44-year-old Mr Ng Kian Teck.
Although the search was halted when darkness fell, Johor chief police officer Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff told the media -- and distraught family members, when he visited the operations room at Tanjong Leman ferry terminal in the afternoon -- that the authorities would do whatever it takes to find Mr Ng.
"We'll carry on as long as is needed to look for the missing person. I've also instructed the police to expedite investigations." he said.
He declined to comment on whether there were enough life jackets on the boat for the 29 passengers -- including 19 Singaporeans -- as investigations were ongoing, but it was clear that the boat travelling towards mainland from a kelong near Sibu island was overloaded.
One of the survivors, Mr Heng Lih Hooi, said he knew there were life jackets in the cabin -- 12, according to his wife -- but none of the passengers was wearing them, nor were they asked to.
"I think wearing the life jackets could probably have saved some of our friends," he told MediaCorp as he related the chaotic situation shortly before the boat capsized.
"About 15 to 20 minutes after we left the kelong, we experienced choppy waters. So the boat was actually shaking quite violently, especially left and right.
"At some time, the boatman asked some of us to go to the front of the boat. I think he was trying to balance the boat. And he called for the action two times."
The boat then sank and a rescue boat arrived 10 minutes later.
"Many of us were trying to struggle out of the cabin. And some of them actually broke the glass, the window, in order to climb out," Mr Heng said.
"I was more worried about my loved ones because my wife is a non-swimmer. I myself am a non-swimmer ...
"The waves kept on splashing over (us) and we were drinking a lot of (sea) water. In fact, some of our relatives were admitted to hospital because of drinking too much sea water.
"I would say we cheated death this time round. We were lucky to survive."
He may not have been the only one. Singapore permanent resident and mechanic Mr Liang, together with his wife and 13-year-old daughter, were supposed to be on the boat that capsized, but decided to take a later boat after he overheard talk that the former was leaking, although investigations are still ongoing.
Earlier in the day, the body of the fourth Singaporean victim, 41-year-old Mr Tor Soon Kwee, was recovered and identified by family members.
Some distraught family members of the four victims gathered outside the mortuary at Mersing on Monday, while others came together at the ferry terminal to offer prayers. One Singaporeans remains warded in hospital.
Mr Mokhtar said the authorities will form a committee to prevent a similar incident from happening again.

Safety precautions
Tourists should practise some common sense when walking around. A guideline would be as followed:
* Do not show off your money and valuables in crowded areas. If you do so, expect to get robbed.
* Try to use small change when purchasing merchandise, etc.
* Do not follow anyone to any unlit lanes.
* Do not get down from your car should you be involved in a road accident. Stay in your car and call the police or your friends for assistance. There are cases where muggers create freak accidents and rob their victims afterwards.
Recyclable Xmas tree
A Christmas tree made of recyclable bottles became the conversation piece at the Aeon Bukit Indah atrium here.
Standing at 15 metres in height, the mall’s complex manager Mizi Tan said some 8,000 1.5litre bottles were used built the ornament.
“The tree aims to get shoppers in a Christmas mood and promote a environment-friendly lifestyle.
“This idea is in line with our mall’s recycling campaign to reuse and recycle unwanted items,” she said.
Tan added the bottles were accumulated for four months from four Aeon branches in the city.
The Christmas tree was modelled after another in Aeon Bukit Tinggi in Malacca, which made it into the Malaysia Book of Records as the tallest tree made from recyclable bottles.
“The tree was completed on Nov 24 and will be on display until Dec 27.
“We hope our shoppers will enjoy looking and taking pictures with the tree,” she said.
She added the company comes up with interesting designs and concepts each year to keep things fresh.
In relating his surprise, shopper Tan Ewe Lok said he had never seen such an ornament made from plastic bottles.
“It is an interesting idea and also a good one as it promotes the principle of reduce, reuse and recycle,” said Tan.
Another shopper Ginnie Su Jin Ning, 6, said she took pictures with the tree as a momento.
“It reminds me of a Christmas tree covered in snow because it is in white,” she said.

Checkpoint congestion ahead
Be prepared for heavy traffic at the two land checkpoints during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said traffic volume at the two land checkpoints is expected to be high for the Christmas period, from December 24 to December 27.
For the New Year period, traffic build-up is also expected from December 31 and the high traffic volume through the checkpoints is expected to last till January 3, 2011.
ICA said travellers using the land checkpoints during these periods can expect delays.
To avoid the surge of people and vehicles seeking clearance at the land checkpoints, ICA is advising travellers to adjust their travel plans and avoid the peak periods altogether.
It said with enhanced security checks, traffic build-up is inevitable, particularly when large number of travellers want to use the checkpoints at the same time.

Shopping malls and hotels create the festive feel
The city is alive with the festive sprit as reflected in Christmas decorations at shoppingcentres and hotels.
Shoppers at Sutera Mall will be greeted by a 6m tall giant Santa Clause when they visit the mall to do their Christmas shopping.
The mall’s senior centre manager Goh Lak Jin said he hoped the Santa Claus figure would add to the mall’s Christmas ambience.
“Other than snowmen and Christmas trees dotted around and inside the mall, there is a huge Christmas tree in the main atrium with 337 cards hanging from it.
“Christmas cards with well wishes were written by residents from Kiwanis Care Heart Association and Pusat Kebajikan Calvary Johor,” he said.
The Zon Johor Baru marketing communication manager Elina Tan said the Christmas decoration at the hotel was themed ‘Adventure Safari’.
“Our staff will be also dressed in safari attire because we wanted to be more innovative this year.
“It is our way of spreading the festive cheer,” she said.
She added there would be a wishing star event, whereby patrons could donate to charity while making a wish on a piece of paper, which would be hung on the Christmas tree in the hotel lounge.
Plaza Pelangi senior promotions assistant Gadafy Abdul Rashid said the mall’s decorations followed a medieval concept.
“We want the customers to feel the Christmas spirit and be transported back to medieval times.
“We aim to make them feel as if they are in a castle fairytale atmosphere,” he said.
He added among the events planned was a costume contest, whereby children could dress up as Santa Claus, Santa Rina and elves.
Danga City Mall marketing executive Mac Chong said the mall has installed a snow machine and would present Christmas carollers and a Santa Claus walkabout.
“The decorations at the mall as well as the events are meant to usher the festive spirit,” she said.
At Johor Baru City Square shoppers are in for a fairytale-like ambience as the theme was ‘Enchanted Christmas’.
The mall’s marketing and promotions manager Irene Teo said the mall aimed to create a warm Christmas atmosphere, which was why colours like purple, pink and white were used.
Hotels on the other hand, are offering scrumptious festive menus for guests to enjoy with their loved ones.

New water transport system to be introduced
A water transport system will make its debut in Iskandar Malaysia within the next few years to provide an alternative transportation mode for commuters.
Danga Bay Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Lim Kang Hoo said the company would introduce water taxi services from Danga Bay here to Puteri Harbour, Nusajaya and even to Singapore.
He said visitors entering Malaysia via Johor Baru in future would have a choice of either using land transport via the Causeway and the Second Link, or the water taxi services.
He said the new Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQP) and ferry terminal to be built at Puteri Harbour under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) would help to increase the number of visitors to Johor Baru.
“Apart from attracting Singaporeans, ferry services from the nearby Riau Islands in Indonesia can be extended to the CIQP to ferry tourists from the islands to Johor Baru,” he added.
Lim, who is also the CEO of Teras Hijaujaya Sdn Bhd, said this at the launch of the Teras Hijaujaya’s commercial property project, Danga Utama @ Skudai recently.
The project is spread over a 7.3ha site located along Jalan Skudai and Jalan Sutera Danga and flanked by Sungai Skudai, which is one of Johor’s most important rivers that flows into Danga Bay.
Sungai Skudai is one of the rivers to be rehabilitated by the Federal Government as part of the RM330mil budget in the 10MP, under the comprehensive river beautification programme.
Phase One of the Danga Utama project comprises 129 units of three-storey shop offices and six blocks of six-storey corporateoffices.
“We will build a jetty in the phase two of the project to cater for water taxi services from Danga Bay to Danga Utama,” Lim explained.
He added that phase two would have high-end condominium tower blocks and retail outlets overlooking Sungai Skudai and the project would keep the company busy for five years with a gross development value of RM500mil.

S. Vely, 32, said she visited the temple regularly every week in the last ten years.
“The atmosphere at the temple is different during Deepavali because there will be mantra chants and I would feel at peace,” said the mother of two.

Nod for Kluang agro-resort park
KLUANG: The Johor government will consider a request by the Kluang Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCCI) for a piece of land to be developed into an agro-resort park.
Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said the state would liaise with the Agriculture and Agro-based Ministry to identify the suitable land plot for the project.
He said this would include land within the Ayer Hitam Agricultural Centre along Jalan Kluang-Batu Pahat just few kilometres away from the Ayer Hitam toll exit.
“KCCCI must make sure that the agro-resort park is successful and able to attract visitors to Kluang,” Ghani said after opening the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Malaysia (ACCCIM) 64th annual general meeting recently.
Ghani said Kluang has the potential to attract visitors interested in the agro-tourism related activities as it has many products such as fruits and vegetable farms and animal husbandries.
He was responding to the request made by the KCCCI president Datuk Tan Seng Leong in his welcoming speech.
Earlier in his speech, Ghani said the Johor government has agreed to contribute RM100, 000 to the KCCCI for its activities.
Tan said the proposed agro-resort park would be different from other agro-resort parks in the country where visitors could plant their favourite fruit trees in dedicated plots.
He said a certificate of ownership of the plants would be issued to them while workers at the park would be the caretakers of their plants.
“As owners, they have a choice of harvesting the fruits for their own consumption or they could ask us to sell the fruits to other visitors,” said Tan.

Lower toll charges when using 2nd Link
Starting Sunday, motorists will enjoy lower toll charges when they drive into or leave Singapore using the Second Link.
Some coach operators were worried that the lower charges would encourage more to use the link, which could cause jams.
They pay a toll of S$3.90 at the Second Link.
One operator, Grassland Express, is taking a wait-and-see approach.
That is because it said the toll does not form the bulk of operating costs.
Instead, it said that rising fuel costs could offset the 30 per cent or S$1.70 toll reduction.
But another coach operator is happy that toll has been reduced. Transtar told Channel NewsAsia that it plans to bring down fares by about 10 per cent.
Destinations that could possibly enjoy such reductions include Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Taiping in Perak and Alor Star in Kedah.
Transtar hopes that the move can make coach travel more attractive.
Sebastian Yap, executive director, Transtar, said: "Low cost carriers have been affecting us a bit. This will be a good opportunity for us to have some free area to adjust ourselves to be more competitive."

Tour guides can cater to foreign tourists
Tour guides should not be blamed over the dwindling number of foreign tourists into the country said Malaysian Tourist Guides Council president Jimmy Leong.
“Several ASEAN countries have seen a drop in arrivals over the past two years especially Japanese and Korean tourists,” he said.
“The world economic situation was a big reason for the drop in arrivals from Korea which was recorded at 250,000 in 2005 but only 78,000 Koreans visited the country last year,” he said.
He added the political instability in Thailand recently did not help the situation.
When asked about a suggestion to improve linguisitic proficiency among the guides to boost tourist arrivals from Korea, Japan, Iran and Russia, Leong dismisses it by saying that there are ample guides who could speak those languages.
Leong, who is also the Johor Tourist Guide Association chairman, said in Johor Baru alone, there are 49 Japanese and 13 Korean-speaking guides.
“We are also embarking on a nationwide survey to gather feedback on the livelihoods of tour guides speaking such languages,” he said.
He said there are a total of 292 tour guides around the country who are proficient in conversing in Japanese, Korean and Arabic respectively.
“The belittling of poor quality tour guides nationwide reflects on the failure of training programs adopted by the Tourism Ministry.
“This is because the process of selection, training, examination and licensing are directly under the purview of the ministry,” he said.
He added that more stringent monitoring of training modules used by institutes was needed to ensure guides are trained professionally.
Last week, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said that foreign tour guides would be allowed to work here due to the lack of Korean, Japanese, Iranian and Russian speaking tour guides nationwide.
She said that foreign tour guides would be closely monitored by the ministry and would only be allowed into the country when there is a need.
Ng added that the move is a wake-up call for local guides to buck up.

“I plan to tell my parents about the fair and hope they will bring my siblings to buy books,” she said.

Johor govt urged to upgrade Hutan Bandar
An assemblyman urged the state government to allocate RM2mil to improve and upgrade the facilities at the popular Hutan Bandar recreation area.
Chia Song Cheng (BN- Pengkalan Rinting) said many of the facilities in the area built in 1993, were not well maintained due to the lack of funds.
“I visited the area in June with the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) landscape director and found an array of problems,” he said during his debate at the state assembly last week.
He said bricks along the track for joggers had become mouldy and this caused the pavement to be slippery and posed a danger especially in the wee hours of the morning.
“I also found the roof of five chalets in the area leaking and all were just covered with a canvas,” Chia said.
He said the pond was covered with sand, earth and overgrown with weeds.
“Many of the facilities at the children’s playground are also old and needs to be better maintained,” he said hoping that the Mentri Besar would look into the matter as Hutan Bandar was a popular spot for many of the city folks.
Besides Hutan Bandar, Chia also raised concerns about cleanliness in the city including having a proper waste disposal system.
He also suggested that a special team be formed to check on cleanliness in the city area.
“I also hope that fines will be issued to those who litter,” he said, adding that more signages reminding and warning the public about littering should also be put up.
Chia said all public complaints need to be addressed immediately and Southern Waste Management (SWM) should not just wait for calls from assemblymen before taking action.

Attract more tourists from Indochina
The Johor tourism department has doubled up its effort to attract more tourists from Indochina as some 280,000 tourists who came to Malaysia last year bypassed Johor during their visits.
State Tourism Committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang said the number of foreign tourist to Malaysia from the region had increased by 27 percent last year compared to 2008.
“Most of the tourists from countries like Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia usually go for packages such as two nights stay in Kuala Lumpur and two nights in Singapore.
“A lot of them have heard of places like Desaru and Tanjung Piai but have never visited as they usually bypass the state to go to Singapore,” he said after launching the 12th Matta Travel Fair at Danga City Mall recently.
Hoo added that 60 percent of the total visitors from Indochina last year were from Vietnam.
“Out of the 15.5mil visitors who visited the state last year, only 1.6mil stayed overnight and the remaining were day-trippers.
“We are looking into upgrading our services and facilities so the visitors will stay at least one night in the state,” he said, adding that the travel fair was a good channel to provide more packages to foreigners.
Hoo said other than promoting the state in the Indochina region, the department was also looking at Japan and India.
“We are planning to invite journalists from Japan and India to visit and write about Johor’s attractions so people in these countries will be more aware of our tourism products.
“The department will be making frequent trips to these countries in a bid to encourage better international coverage for Johor,” he said.
Matta National president Datuk Mohd Khalid Harun said the travel fair not only promoted tourism, it also generated economic activities in the state.
“I believe the three-day fair plays a critical role in helping the government in creating job opportunities, promoting tourism as well as economic growth.
“I urge the exhibitors to treat the customers with courtesy and practice good business ethics so more people purchase their travel products,” he said.
The three-day fair has a total of 46 exhibitors displaying 155 booths offering affordable and attractive travel packages to both international and domestic destinations.

Iskandar Malaysia to be fully developed
The next two years will be a robust time for Iskandar Malaysia as many of its projects will be completed, said Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.
Abdul Ghani said projects, such as Legoland, an indoor theme park at Puteri Harbour, Newcastle University Medical Malaysia (NuMED) and Marlborough College in EduCity, and many others would be completed and operational by 2012.
“Several groundbreaking ceremonies have been scheduled this year, including the Johor Premium Outlet at Kulaijaya, the Senai Hi-Tech Park and CyberCity also in Kulaijaya,” he said in his speech during the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FFM) Johor branch dinner at The Zon Regency Hotel here.
Abdul Ghani also said the job market was becoming livelier while roads and other infrastructure were upgraded with new ones built in the Iskandar Malaysia economic region.
He said the focus was to ensure Iskandar Malaysia had all the elements to create a conducive environment that would spur its development into a vibrant and exciting regional commercial hub of the future.
“The next step, beyond the first three years of courting investors, is to see how much investment we can bring to Johor.
“For that, I hope all stakeholders will assist by working harder to bring in new investments,” he said.
Abdul Ghani said companies that embrace innovation and have the foresight to reshape and revitalise their activities would have many opportunities and bright prospects to be a global player.
“Malaysian companies, investors and entrepreneurs are urged to seize the opportunities before us and grow to become regional and global entities,” he said.
Abdul Ghani also urged local authorities to forge a better relationship with manufacturers.
“Local authorities have been reminded time and time again to provide efficient service towards manufacturers,” he said.

Outdoor hawker centre back in JB city
Johor plans to reintroduce the Ungku Puan night outdoor hawker centre as part of the Johor Baru city centre transformation plan.
Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said reopening the centre would help bring back the crowd to the city centre especially after office hours and at nights.
“This is one of the things that we want to include in the transformation plan,’’ he said at the opening of the Columbia Asia Hospital Nusajaya @ Afiat Healthpark recently.
The hawker centre, which was the biggest alfresco dining area in the city centre, was highly popular with locals and tourists but was closed several years ago by the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB).
Ghani said the reopening of the centre would have to include proper disposal of food wastes and hawkers must practice high standard of hygiene.
He said apart from the centre, the opening of Sungai Segget, which was covered and turned into a pedestrian walkway several years ago, would be the impetus of the transformation plan.
Prime Minister had recently announced that RM200mil would be allocated to open and clean up Sungai Segget, one of the filthiest rivers in Malaysia.
The river, which flows along Jalan Wong Ah Fook in Johor Baru city centre, was covered at a cost of RM6mil as the stench and sight of rubbish and raw sewage being dumped into it was becoming unbearable to many.
“We are looking at the Cheonggyecheon Stream that flows in downtown Seoul in South Korea to rejuvenate Sungai Segget,’’ said Ghani.
The 5.8km stream was such an eyesore before it was covered with concrete step by step over 20 years from 1958, while a 5.6km-long and 16m-elevated highway was completed in 1976.
In July 2003, then Seoul mayor Lee Myung-bak, now president of South Korea, initiated a project to remove the elevated highway and restore the stream.
Three years later, the once extremely filthy stream was rejuvenated at a cost of US$350mil (RM1.15bil) and now Cheonggyecheon has become a popular recreational park among Seoul residents and tourists.

Identifying historical sites along Sg Johor
The state has initiated a study to identify historical sites located along Sungai Johor which have the potential to be developed into tourist attraction destinations.
State Rural Development, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Asiah Md Arif said however, many of these sites were owned by land owners or situated at river reserve.
“If the state agrees to the setting up of the Sungai Johor Development Board (SJDB), land acquisition for the sites will be handled via the District Land Office,” she said during the state assembly last week.
She said after acquisition, the sites have to be gazetted before it can be turned into a tourist attraction product.
“The sites identified are part of the old Johor government after the fall of the Malacca government,” she said.
She added that the expedition program ‘Kembara Wangsa’, held in August last year was organised to discover the best way to develop these historical sites.
“Efforts have also been made with the aid of Universiti Sains Malaysia to excavate and maintain the historical sites around Bukit Seluyut which was the centre of the old Johor government.
“The site identified is also where Tun Seri Lanang started compiling and writing Malay annals,” she said.
She said the state government should acquire and gazette the sites where the graves of historical figures were located and preserve them for future generation.
Among the graves of historical figures discovered are Sultan Muzaffar Shah, Raja Fatimah, Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah I and Bendahara Tun Isap Misai.

Vivid play on history
A vivid mixture of history, music, dance, martial arts and costumes was a sight to behold to those who attended the musical play entitled Bumi Berlantai Permata held in conjunction with the launching ceremony of the JB Arts Festival here.
The play, which was the main highlight of the ceremony, centred around attempts by the British to encroach into state affairs by creating the post of General Advisor to the Sultan which would be held by them.
It portrayed the Chinese and Malay pioneers in the state during the British colonial era.
Jasmine Chan, 20, said this was her first time watching a musical and was thrilled at the whole experience.
“I especially liked how the musical portrayed Wong Ah Fook, who spoke Malay with a Chinese accent. I also love the choreography and the music score which was fast paced and entertaining,” she said.
Another visitor, Desmond Dinesh, 25, said the wushu martial arts movements during the musical was his favourite part.
“I think the collaboration of history, Malay traditional dances and martial arts was spectacular. I was pleasantly surprised at the end of the play as I never expected it to be that good,” he said.
Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman who launched the festival was also among the spectators.
The Johor Society for the Performing Arts president Yap Siong Cheng said the play and other performances lined up during the JB Arts Festival was a way to build bridges within the various local communities.
“The festival allows the people to come together and appreciate performances and cultures within the community,” he said.
The 7th JB Arts Festival which runs until July 24 features dances, musical performances, contemporary and traditional performances and workshops.

More people will use 2nd Link
Small-time business operators within the Second Link area are looking forward to getting more customers and better profits following the Government’s announcement of its decision to reduce toll charges beginning Aug 1.
Many believe that the move will spur more people to use the Second Link, which has been under utilised due to its high toll rates compared to the Causeway in Johor Baru.
Businessman Misran Sapan, 50, said the number of people using the highway had declined drastically since 2008 when the toll rates were revised upwards by at least 60%.
“With this latest news from the Government, hopefully more people will use this link and this will help translate into better business for us,” said the fruit-seller operating at a rest area along the Second Link.
Another trader Wong Fook Ling, 32, said that presently most of his customers were bus passengers as most tourist buses preferred the Second Link, which was not congested.
“A lot of people complain about the traffic jam in Johor Bahru and prefer to pay a bit more to use this link,” he said, adding that he expected business to pick up soon after the new toll rates start.
For putu mayam seller Jiva Nantam, 45, the Government’s decision was timely as there was a vast difference in toll rates between the Second Link and Causeway.
Lowering the toll rates on the Second Link would be good for our business, he added.
A Singaporean who wished to be known only as Tan, 52, said he used the Second Link only for work as he could claim for the toll.
“During family outings on weekends, I use the Causeway because it is much cheaper,” he said.
He said if the toll rates at the Second Link was made similar to the Causeway, many Singaporeans would likely bypass Johor Baru and head to Malacca and other neighbouring states, adding that this would hurt Johor’s economy.
Last week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong announced a 30% reduction in toll rates to boost people-to-people relations.

RM1m revenue from homestay programme
Johor is aiming for more than RM1mil in revenue from the homestay eco-tourism sector this year, state Tourism Committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang said.
The eco-tourism homestay was among a host of initiatives to promote tourism in Johor, he said.
He said the state hoped to double the earnings from the homestay sector which currently only accounted for 10% of the state’s total tourism income.
“The sector is growing steadily and we are confident that we can achieve this target,” he told a press conference after launching the tourism seminar for secondary school students here on Monday.
Hoo said the state would increase its number of homestay locations which presently stood at 15 and planned to target foreign travellers as much as domestic tourists.
“Johor accounts for more than 50% of the country’s foreign tourist arrival booked for a homestay. Out of 5,479 visitors, 3,120 opted for homestays in Johor.
“Our niche markets are Japanese and Singaporean tourists,” he said.
He said the state was also planning to promote homestay through the new tourist information centre that was expected to start operations by end of next month.
On a separate matter, Hoo said Johor aimed to increase the number of tourism clubs in schools where currently 1,400 students were members of 21 clubs statewide.
“The younger generation, especially students, need to realise the potential of the tourism industry in Malaysia. It can provide various career prospects,” he added.
