Tangkok textiles

Tangkak

More than 40 shops selling textiles along a one-kilometre stretch of Jalan Payamas, Tangkak. Talk about choices! With more than 40 shops selling textiles along a one-kilometre stretch of Jalan Payamas, Tangkak earned its nickname, Textile Town, the shopping destination for quality fabrics.

In the early 1990s, a group of young cloth merchants who had learnt their trade from working in other parts of the country, decided to apply their skills by starting a textile business here. These local traders successfully secured fabric deals from the world over and were able to resell them at competitive prices.

The wide range and good prices garnered a regular clientele who enjoy shopping for fabrics in a virtual textile heaven, particularly during pre-festive seasons. Be prepared to be dazzled by the choices because there are fabrics for every purpose, from home décor, drapes, outfits, trousseaus to handicraft needs.

Gunung Ledang (Mount Ophir)

Mount Ophir (Malay: Gunung Ledang) is a mountain in the Gunung Ledang National Park located in Tangkak District (formerly part of Muar), Johor, Malaysia. The summit is located between the border of Muar and Melaka. Standing at 1,276 m (4,186 ft), it is the 64th highest mountain in Malaysia.

Origins of its name

There are a few popular opinions regarding the origin of the mountain's name. According to one opinion, ancient history points to the mountain being the site of rich gold deposits, luring traders from as far as Greece and China. Ophir was a biblical-era land rich with natural resources mentioned in the Torah, also known at the Hebrew Bible.

In the 14th Century, the Chinese seafarers plying the Straits of Malacca called it Kim Sua meaning the 'golden mountain', possibly from the Hokkien or Taiwanese words: kim, or in characters 金 meaning gold and sua, or 山 meaning mountain .

Another source said that the Javanese during the period of the Majapahit empire named the mountain Gunong Ledang, which means 'lofty mountain', from Archaic Javanese word ledang meaning 'show-off'.

It has been called "Ophir" by British cartographers since at least 1801, based on a map from that year. The name Ophir itself is thought to have originated from any of these languages:

Hebrew, from אוֹפִיר transliterated to 'Owphiyr, or pronounced as ō·fēr, a Hebrew personal name and in reference to the biblical land of Ophir from which King Solomon obtained gold, precious gems and ivory for the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.

Big plans for Gunung Ledang

Big plans for Gunung Ledang

Elaborate plans are being formulated to transform Mount Ophir, better known as Gunung Ledang, in Tangkak here into an international tourist destination.

Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Hamim Samuri said its scenic beauty, lush vegetation, cool and tranquil environment and the cascading waterfall, enriched by tales of the legendary home of a bunian (invisible) princess, make for a great tourist attraction.

He said all infrastructure developments and facilities to reach the mountain have been upgraded.

Hamim, who is the Ledang member of parliament, said plans are also under way to promote Ledang into the hub of cottage and downstream industries.

"I will be meeting with officers from the Tourism Ministry soon to find ways to further promote the destination as a tourist site," he said at the Hari Raya open house in Tangkak Dewan Jubili Intan here last Monday night.

More than 5,000 people including members of the Barisan Nasional component parties, local community leaders and Malaysians of all walks of life attended the event.

Hamim said he would call on the Ministry to "sell" Gunung Ledang to tourists in all over the world.

He said he would encourage tourists from Singapore and Malacca to stay overnight at the mountain resort and Tangkak, adding that Ledang has sufficient first-class hotels and homestay facilities to accommodate them.

Hamim said he would also encourage tourists to visit the textile town in Tangkak and herbal and orchard farms in nearby villages.

"I have taken the first step with a RM2 million allocation to green, beautify, brighten and smoothen traffic flow at the Tangkak toll, to welcome tourists."

Hamim said the project was completed in six months this year.

He said he would listen to views and suggestions of the people to put Gunung Ledang on the world's tourism map.

Gunung Ledang, which is 1,276 metres above sea level, has some of the most striking floral and plant species in the world.

Taking Tangkak higher

Taking Tangkak higher

THE Tourism Ministry wants Tangkak to be promoted as a textile shopping haven in a move to boost the country’s industrial tourism sector.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the town with its large number of textile retailers has a potential to be a popular textile hub in the region.

She said Tangkak used to be a popular textile centre in the 70s and 80s but lost its popularity after places like Nilai in Negeri Sembilan, was developed.

“Due to stiff competition from these new business areas, that also focused on selling textile and fabrics, Tangkak has become less attractive to shoppers.

“However, we now planning to bring back the popularity and make Tangkak a major tourist textile shopping spot of the country,” she said after launching the Tangkak Textile Festival 2011 recently.

Dr Ng said besides fabrics and textiles, she also wanted the town to have tailors where dresses and curtains could be made fast for the shoppers.

She said many shops in Tangkak sold curtain fabrics and urged traders and designers create and sell ready-made curtains.

Dr Ng added that at the same time, the ministry also wanted the local authority to set up food stalls and restaurants serving dishes that are unique to the area.

“People can name the dishes as Tangkak mee, Tangkak rojak or Tangkak fried rice that should be delicious and cheap.”

She also praised the Ledang district office and the Tangkak district council as well as all textile traders in town for organising the textile festival.

Dr Ng said the Tangkak textile festival from March 3 – 6 would also be promoted as an annual tourism event.

A section of the road in the town would be closed to all traffic to accommodate the retailers.

“We want shoppers and tourists to shop and walk along the road without interference from moving vehicles and encourage the traders to organise fashion shows and exhibitions to promote their textiles and curtains during the festival,” she added.
