Singapore welcomes Malaysia’s proposal for sheltered walkways across the Causeway

Singapore welcomes Malaysia’s proposal for sheltered walkways across the Causeway

Singapore welcomed Malaysia’s plans to build sheltered walkways across the Causeway, although it has yet to receive any official proposal or communication on the plans.

In response to TODAY’s queries on Malaysia’s plans for sheltered walkways linking Johor to Woodlands, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Transport (MOT) said on Wednesday (June 19) that there is already a pedestrian walkway on Singapore’s half of the Causeway beside the vehicular lanes.

That section of walkway is largely not sheltered, and is available only along the outbound side of the Causeway heading towards Malaysia.

“We welcome the construction of a sheltered walkway on Malaysia’s side linking the Johor Baru CIQ (Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex) to the pedestrian walkway on Singapore’s side,” the spokesperson added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Malaysian news agency Bernama reported that the proposed 1.2km sheltered walkway would be built on the existing motorcycle lanes on both sides of the Causeway.

It is expected to cost about RM15 million (S$4.9 million).

The plan by the Malaysian authorities is to make it safer for the thousands of pedestrians who cross the Causeway daily.

Mr Mohd Solihan Badri, chairman of Johor’s Public Works, Infrastructure and Transportation Committee, said that the project will solve the safety issue of people walking on the same road as vehicles. He added that 60 per cent of those who use the Causeway are pedestrians, Bernama reported.

TODAY previously reported that an estimated 300,000 people cross the border daily.

The MOT spokesperson also said that Singapore is committed to working with Malaysia to find practical and effective solutions to resolve the issue of congestion along the bridge.

20 tourist destinations, 20 international events to enliven Visit Johor Year 2020

20 tourist destinations, 20 international events to enliven Visit Johor Year 2020

BATU PAHAT, June 2 (Bernama) -- Johor Tourism will introduce 20 chosen destinations, each with its respective travel products next year in an effort to attract more tourists to the state in conjunction with Visit Johor Year 2020.

State Tourism director Johor Zihan Ismail said apart from that, 20 domestic and international events will be organised, which will feature the theme ‘2020’.

“Next year we plan to introduce 20 destinations with unique tourism products and 20 international and domestic programmes or events in conjunction with Visit Johor Year 2020,” she told Bernama recently.

All of which will be announced during the pre-launch of the Visit Johor Year 2020 logo and mascot, which is scheduled for early July.

According to Zihan, it is now in the process of detailing the 20 selected destinations with the products in all 10 districts in the state.

“We’ll see which ones have the potential to be promoted in conjunction with the Visit Johor Year 2020. We have a lot of products in Johor and to select 20 is indeed a challenge for Johor Tourism,” she said, adding that local officials also helped in the selection.

In regard to the 20 events or programmes, Zihan said some of them were listed in the state’s tourism calendar that covers sports, education and various other events.

“We also plan to expand the size of existing events as well as introduce new events.

“Johor is also famous for its food range. We have a lot of excellent Johor heritage food so there will be an event to introduce our heritage food,” she said.

Next year, Johor will be the focus not only for Visit Johor Year 2020 but will also be hosting the Malaysia Games (Sukma). Along with that, the state government has set a target of 17.4 million tourist arrivals for next year.

Last year, 15.84 million tourists visited the state and this year, the state government is targeting 16.6 million tourists.

Finding ways to encourage tourists to visit historical places

Finding ways to encourage tourists to visit historical places

JOHOR BAHRU, June 2 (Bernama) -- The Johor State Government will try to find ways to attract more foreign tourists to historical places like the state’s museum.

State Health, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar who made the assurance said the approach was taken because such places are less exposed to tourists.

“… while overseas, people like to visit historical places but in Malaysia especially in Johor, it’s different.

“Tour guides are more likely to take tourists to shopping malls and theme parks despite knowing Johor is steeped in history and has a lot of historical places,” he said in an interview here recently.

“Therefore, there is need for more organised arrangements between the State Health, Culture and Heritage Committee and the State Tourism, Women Development, Family and Community Committee, whose chairman is Liow Cai Tung so that tourists are encouraged to visit these historical sites too.

“This is in line with the commitment of both parties to promote next year as ‘Visit Johor Year’.

“In doing this, we will also find ways to ensure economic gains in these tourism activities which can be enjoyed by the whole community.

“This is because in Yogyakarta (Indonesia) for example, I can see the economic spin-off from such attractions (visiting historic places) directed to the people around which allows them to sell clothings, become tour guides and so on. This is very different from the situation in Malaysia especially Johor,” he said.

Meanwhile, commenting on the ‘Visit Johor Year’, Mohd Khuzzan said various programmes have been organised to highlight the heritage and culture of the state including Johor Heritage Food Festival, Music and Folk Dance Festival.

Durian: Johor looking for next big hit

Durian: Johor looking for next big hit

Johor is searching for a new breed of durian that will cement its ranking as the main durian producer in the country.

State Islamic Affairs, Agriculture and Rural Development Committee chairman Tosrin Jarvanthi said Johor produced 52,261 metric tonnes of durian last year, making it the main durian producer in the country followed by Pahang and Sarawak.

“The government will be hosting the state level agriculture expo and fruit fair 2019 in Segamat between June 28 and 30 where the theme is 'Everything Durian'.

“There will be many side events, including to find a new variety of durian that has commercial value,” he added.

Tosrin pointed out that there were at least 12 durian variety originally from Johor, which have already been registered so far and the main objective is to discover a new one.

“The most famous one is Durian Hajah Hasmah, better known as Durian IOI, and we are confident we'll find a new one that will taste even better through the festival,” he added.

Tosrin said this in a press conference held at the state Agriculture Department headquarters here on Wednesday (June 19).

Booking Grab ride in Malaysia? Submit selfie first

Booking Grab ride in Malaysia? Submit selfie first

All Grab users in Malaysia will soon have to do a one-time selfie verification in order to use the app in the country. This is to fulfil regulatory requirements.

It will be similar to what new Grab users in Singapore are already doing, and a company spokesman said yesterday that Singaporeans would also have to comply with the Malaysian rule when using the app across the Causeway.

Grab, through an announcement on its Malaysian app and its website, informed users recently that the compulsory measure will be in place by July 12.

The website message read: "The selfie is for identity verification, safety, and may be used to assist the authorities when required. Grab ensures that your selfie and identity are secure and will not be shared with our driver-partners and merchants."

Grab added that explicit permission would be sought before any access to users' cameras.

Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke had last July announced that, as part of new rules, passengers would have to upload valid identification card or passport details when they register for a ride-hailing account. He gave a year's grace to meet the requirements.

Grab adopted facial recognition technology to meet the new rule, with first-time users required to submit a selfie of themselves before booking a ride.

The Star daily reported that the new requirement has already helped solve a robbery-cum-murder case involving a Grab driver. Two suspects were nabbed in connection with the death of Mr Mohd Hanafiee Jaafar, who was robbed and killed on the job last month.

The incident resulted in drivers fearing post-midnight trips and avoiding areas deemed dangerous, The Star said.

Within Singapore, Grab users who signed up before February this year did not have to go through selfie verification, with their identities verified by either their Facebook account or credit card details.

But new users signing up from February have had to submit selfies to successfully open their accounts.

The Grab spokesman said: "These are part of our ongoing efforts to ensure high safety and security standards on our platform for both our customers and driver-partners."

Singaporeans who use Grab during trips to Malaysia told ST that they did not mind submitting a selfie so long as it was used solely for verification purposes.

Ms Wong Shi Hui, 25, who works in events management and visits Malaysia every three months, said: "It is good that measures are in place to protect drivers as well. Selfies seem harmless enough if they can ensure a safe ride for everyone."

More travellers using Senai International Airport

More travellers using Senai International Airport

Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATSSB) is expecting some 3.76 million air travellers to pass through Senai International Airport by the end of the year.

Its chief executive officer Md Derick Basir said based on statistics recorded over the last six years, the number of travellers using the airport had increased significantly.

He said in 2013, some 1.3 million passengers were recorded and that the figure went up to 2.3 million in 2014, 2.5 million (2015), 2.8 million (2016), 3.1 million (2017) and 3.5 million in 2018.

“We are optimistic about surpassing the 3.76 million target by the year-end and if everything goes well, we could even hit the four million mark,’’ Md Derick said.

"We are optimistic about surpassing the 3.76 million target by the year-end." - Md Derick Basir

He said in the pipeline were plans for expansion of the terminal’s new domestic arrival hall and the new waiting area at the departure hall costing between RM13mil and RM15mil.

He said work on the project would start in the fourth-quarter of the year and among the new features at the new domestic arrival hall were baggage handling system, retail lots, office spaces and covered walkway.

Md Derick said the new waiting area at the departure hall, which could cater to 180 passengers at a time, would include two new gates, toilets and new ramp walkway.

He said Senai Airport would also be connected to Shanghai, China, its newest international route in the fourth quarter of the year.

“Air connectivity is important if Johor wants to attract more domestic and foreign tourists to visit the state and have repeat visitors,’’ said Md Derick.

Senai International Airport started its operation in 1974 and is the only privately managed civilian airport in the country. SATSSB is a member of MMC Group.

Prior to the acquisition in 2003, the airport was handling only approximately 800,000 passengers.

On Visit Johor Year 2020 (VJY2020), he said Senai Airport would be working closely with the state government and Tourism Johor to promote it as a tourist destination.

“We will organise a joint promotion event called ‘Airport Festival’ as a teaser to VJY2020,’’ he said, adding that there would also be familiarisation and marketing trips for airlines and social media influencers to introduce attractions and tourism products in Johor.

New VMY 2020 logo to be unveiled this month

New VMY 2020 logo to be unveiled this month

The logo for Visit Malaysia 2020 will be unveiled during the national-level Hari Raya open house at the Royal Museum in Kuala Lumpur on June 22.

“The Prime Minister himself chose the logo on the eve of Hari Raya.

“The theme and logo will be unveiled then,” Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said during his Hari Raya open house at SMK Pondok Upeh here yesterday.

A total of 586 entries were submitted for a design competition in March.

The design will also symbolise the various attractive ecotourism products in Malaysia.

Early last year, the Visit Malaysia 2020 logo did not go down well with social media users, as they generally felt that the design was not up to standard.

The emblem featured a cartoon of an orang utan in sunglasses hugging a proboscis monkey, a silhouette of the Petronas Twin Towers and a turtle on a beach, also wearing sunglasses. It included a caption: “Travel. Enjoy. Respect.”

Muhammad Bakhtiar said that events meant for Visit Malaysia 2020 would be required to be coordinated with the secretariat in charge of the campaign.

“This is to ensure it does not clash with other events under Visit Malaysia 2020,” he said.

He was responding to the proposal to bring BTS, a K-pop group, to the country for the celebration next year.

In April, Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman had promised to bring the boy band to Malaysia and Tan Sri Tony Fernandes was tasked to deliver on this pledge.

Yesterday’s Raya open house was jointly hosted by Muhammad Bakhtiar, who is also the Balik Pulau MP, together with Pulau Betong assemblyman Mohd Tuah Ismail and Teluk Bahang assemblyman Zolkifly Md Lazim.

Singaporeans flock to JB

Singaporeans flock to JB

Johor is said to have been named after the Arabic word jauhar which means gems. There may be no precious stones these days but Johor’s shine is not lost on shoppers from Singapore.

As Hari Raya beckons, they have been making trips across the Causeway to shop for the festive season or to savour the variety of traditional Malay dishes sold at the Ramadan bazaars around Johor.

Housewife Yati Abdullah, 41, said she came to Johor to hunt for last-minute deals.

“We prefer shopping for Raya here as it is cheaper and there are a lot more options for us to choose from, especially when it comes to food and clothes.

Yati said that she and her family had been visiting Johor Baru almost every weekend during the month of Ramadan to shop and to get food.

Planning engineer Amirul Ariff Mohd Fauzi, 25, said that he and his friends came over the weekend to get the traditional fare for breaking of fast.

“We would usually go to the Ramadan bazaar to look for dishes that are difficult to get in Singapore,” he said.

He said he bought a set of baju Raya for RM300.

“It would have cost S$300 (RM915) back home,” he said.

Driver Asri Daud, 37, said that he and his wife came to Johor to look for biscuits to present as gifts for friends.

“We will normally give to our non-Muslim friends and colleagues some biscuits during Hari Raya and this is the best place to get it,” he said.

“It is a lot cheaper here as most shops selling Raya biscuits in Singapore also got their supplies from here.”

Biscuit seller Kharmilah Amir, 39, said she had been getting many customers from Singapore since last Thursday.

“Our operating hours have also been extended to midnight since last Tuesday as we normally get more customers at night,” she said.
