Kampung Melayu Majidee here will undergo a makeover and be upgraded to City Heritage status to make it a major tourist attraction.

Johor Baru mayor Datuk Amran A Rahman said the move to upgrade the village was contained in the draft of Johor Baru Special Area Plan 2030 (RKK 2030).

He said the RKK 2030 was a large scale development plan to rejuvenate the densely populated area to project a new look.

"In the RKK 2030, Kampung Melayu Majidee - which is the oldest village which has been around since the 15th century - will not only be accorded City Heritage status, but will also have its image and identity upgraded.

"It will also become a main tourist attraction. These include maintaining the traditional houses with Limas elements, creating a live museum as well as building an auditorium that offers theatre, orchestra and traditional Malay dance performances.

"We will also give incentives to owners of the traditional homes in the village, for the purpose of beautifying the landscape and conservation efforts, so that tourists can come and see the beauty of the Limas Malay houses."

He was speaking at a press conference after the launch of the Publicity and Public Participation Programme of RKK 2030 here today.

It was launched by chairman of the Local Government, Urban Wellbeing and Environment Committee Tan Chen Choon.

Also present were Johor Baru member of parliament Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and Stulang state assemblyman Chen Kah Eng.

Amran said eight zones, involving Kampung Melayu Majidee, Bandar Baru Uda, Larkin, Kebun Teh, Wadi Hana, Taman Pelangi, Stulang and Bakar Batu will be involved in the RKK 2030.

"The Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) will also upgrade all historic buildings within the planned RKK, besides constructing recreational areas including near the riverside, landscaping it with murals and graffiti, and beautifying the areas," he said.

Amran said the full development plan of RKK 2030 was being displayed at the Exhibition Room, Level 2 of MBJB’s Department of Planning and Development from today until May 30.

"It is open from 8.30am to 4.30pm. Johor Baru residents can submit their suggestions or disagreements about the development plan in the forms provided.

"The proposal can also be sent online at www.mbjb.gov.my, or on our Facebook, MBJBrasmi," he added.
