Spice and herb farm gaining popularity

MUAR: The Nasuha Spice and Herb Farm near Pagoh has become a major destination for tourists and students from all over Malaysia who wanted to learn more about spices and herbs.

The farm, located along the Muar–Pagoh road, has more than 6,000 plants with 132 species that are known with medicinal value.

One of the visitors, Halimah Ibrahim who led 40 members the Taman Setapak Jaya Housewives Association from Kuala Lumpur to the farm said the housewives were aware of the attraction which is the biggest spice and herb farm in the region.

“We were surprised to see many spice and herb plants, which are used almost every day in our lives but rarely seen, are planted on this farm.

“The members are also impressed with the 500ha farm with facilities like factories, a spice and herb museum, a herbal restaurant, spas and a gallery,” she said when met recently.

Apart from the visting housewives, some students from Universiti Teknologi Mara in Jengka, Pahang, also found their trip to farm to be highly educational.

Plantation industries and management Student Nurul Fathiah Abu Bakar, 19, said she learned a lot about the herb and spice production at the farm including the extraction process for plant essence used in perfume making.

Meanwhile, the farm’s managing director Nasuha Kesian said his company had invested RM13mil to develop and promote the farm since it was opened more than 27 years ago.

“People call me crazy for spending so much on spices and herbs but to me, these ingredients are important in our daily life and need to be developed.

“Besides growing and selling spices and herbs, we also export essential oils overseas, mostly to France, for use as perfume bases,” he added.
